1. Photo Challenges

Photo-a-Day 2009

This gallery represents a return to the Photo-a-Day challenge. The goal is to publish one photograph shot every day in 2009. There are no set themes, so the subjects will vary widely from day-to-day. The last time I took this challenge was in 2006. Here is a link to my 2006 Photo-a-Day Gallery.

 •
July 20, 2009
Leaning Piling

Back to Bold Point again for today's shot. This piling reminds me somewhat of a gallows with the rope dangling as it does.

Bold Point Park
East Providence, Rhode Island

 •
July 18, 2009
Roadside Shack

This little shack sits in the tiny village of Twin Mountain. It made a nice subject on an early morning in the White Mountains.

Twin Mountain, New Hampshire

 •
July 17, 2009
Portrait of a Goose

There are flocks of geese and ducks at the Old Grist Mill. They're so used to being fed that you can literally walk right up to them. Here's one such goose that didn't mind having a closeup taken while he munched on some grass.

Canada Goose
Seekonk, Massachusetts

 •
July 15, 2009
Old New England

Here's a classic example of an old New England town church. This one is nestled in the town of North Woodstock.

North Woodstock, New Hampshire

 •
July 14, 2009
Franconia Ridge

This is why I hike. Here's a view of Franconia Ridge Trail as seen from the summit of Little Haystack. The peak in the distance is a false summit before reaching Mount Liberty. This is a great 8 mile loop that spends about 3 miles above treeline in the White Mountains.

Franconia Ridge Trail
Franconia Notch, New Hampshire

 •
July 13, 2009
Grazing

Hidden in the middle of one of the most congested parts of Rhode Island are a series of 19th century horse farms. Here's one of them along Angel Road in Lincoln.

Lincoln, Rhode Island

 •
July 12, 2009
Hidden Shack

Well, actually not a shack at all, and certainly not hidden. There is this stone garage or storage building on Woodward Road. It looks like it may actually have been an outdoor market stall or something of that nature when this area was all farmland. This photo is from one overgrown side, but the building is quite long.

North Providence, Rhode Island

 •
July 11, 2009
Pebbles

This is actually an indoor shot of some craft pebbles I picked up a while ago. I rather like the texture of the rocks.

North Providence, Rhode Island

 •
July 10, 2009
Feeding Swan

I went to Bold Point for today's photo and saw a number of mute swans dipping into the shallow water and coming up with some grass. I thought this one would make a nice shot.

Bold Point Park
East Providence, Rhode Island

 •
July 9, 2009
Flying Fish

I've been waiting for an opportunity to photograph this cupola over Whole Foods. The dramatic sky in the background coupled with some HDR processing made today the perfect time for the shot.

Whole Foods
Cranston, Rhode Island

 •
July 8, 2009
High Water

It was the high water mark that drew my attention today. Compare the water level with earlier shots of those pilings and you'll see what I mean.

Washington Bridge
East Providence, Rhode Island

 •
July 7, 2009
Mooring

I stopped at India Point for today's photo and decided to take this shot of a mooring on the docks.

India Point Park
Providence, Rhode Island

 •
July 5, 2009
Indian Head

Now that the Old Man in the Mountain is gone, Indian Head on Mount Pemigewassett is the only remaining natural rock head formation in the state. Chief Pemigewassett used to use these cliffs as a lookout. The mountain now bears his name as a tribute.

Indian Head
North Woodstock, New Hampshire

 •
July 4, 2009
Raging River

This is the Oliverian Brook on Mount Passaconaway. Normally it's a gently flowing stream, but after almost two months of rain it's a raging river.

Oliverian Brook
Conway, New Hampshire
