There's a small herd of white tail deer frequenting the Operation Center where I work despite it being in the middle of an urban area. kannafoot > February 28, 2009Foghorn Leghorn Shops HereThis brightly colored fiberglass rooster has been camped out in front of Sollitto's Liquor Mart in Providence since 1969. The bird does bear a remarkable resemblance to Warner Brothers' Foghorn Leghorn. Sollitto's Liquor MartProvidence, Rhode Island
kannafoot > May 25, 2009Memorial DaySince today is Memorial Day, a day originally set aside to honor our Civil War dead, I thought it fitting to take this photo of my great-great-grandfather's grave. He was a corporal in Battery F of the 1st Rhode Island Light Artillery during the Civil War and is buried in the Grand Army of the Republic section of the North Burial Ground in Providence. kannafoot > April 11, 2009Stone TexturesThis beautiful stone building was built in 1815 when the Industrial Revolution hit Smithfield, Rhode Island. The village of Esmond, which is part of Smithfield, was home to several large mills. Some of them are still in use as industrial buildings, while most of the others have been converted into condos. This stone building has seen it all, although it sits empty today.Smithfield, Rhode Island
kannafoot > February 25, 2009Amber Waves of GrainThis is another day where a shot presented itself while I was en route to a different location. Again, I opted to take this shot when it presented itself and I'll save the historic home for another day.Seekonk, Massachusetts
kannafoot > January 29, 2009"Gimma a sangwich, a grinder, and a coffee cabinet"Now, if you don't know what any of those are, then you're definitely not from Rhode Island! That's also true if you didn't pronounce "grinder" correctly. For the record, it's GRINE-duh. We Rhode Islanders don't understand why the rest of you still pronounce that extraneous "R" at the end of certain words. We all know it's really "pahk", not "park", and "cah", not "car". Eventually, everyone else will get it right!Anthony's Italian DeliProvidence, Rhode Island
kannafoot > March 13, 2009Full BloomOne of the Administrative Assistants at work received some flowers today and I thought they'd make a nice photo-a-day shot. These were taken in some pretty low office light without a flash using my macro 4x filter. I'm rather surprised they came out as sharp as they did. In any case, it's nice to finally get some flowers online even if they were from an indoor plant!East Providence, Rhode Island
kannafoot > February 17, 2009Fort HillThis is a shot of downcity Providence taken from the East Bay Bike Path. Old timers in the area remember when this highpoint on Veteran's Parkway was called "Fort Hill", but few know why. This overlook was once home to a Revolutionary War fort. The canons on this hill defended Providence from British invasion. As an interesting side note, General Nathaniel Greene spent the night at this fort during the army's long march from Newport to Yorktown where the British ultimately surrendered.East Bay Bike PathEast Providence, Rhode Island
kannafoot > March 1, 2009In Like a LionWhat would the beginning of March be without a major snowstorm? The forecast for tonight includes up to a foot of snow. Today's photo is of some fresh fallen snow on the side window of my father's car. I used my 4x macro lens on my 300mm zoom to produce this effect. I like the abstract nature of it.
