kannafoot > February 15, 2009Nightmare in StoneIt looks innocent enough. It even has a new name: "Chapel View". But to any guy over the age of 40 that grew up in Rhode Island, this brick chapel was simply known as "The Bad Boy School". Officially, it's at Sockanosset, the Rhode Island Training School for Boys, but our name sounded much more ominous. Long before the era of "time outs", back when you could actually spank a kid for doing something wrong, this stone edifice was the ultimate punishment threat a parent had at their disposal. A simple, "that's it, you're going to the bad boy school" would tame the wildest ruffian. I don't think any of us ever really met someone who had been here - the kids incarcerated here were well out of our age bracket - but the threat took on a life of its own and was extremely effective. Today, the entire complex has been turned into a shopping plaza with condominiums, and they're renovating the chapel to be the office. For us old timers, though, it will always be the Bad Boy School. The Chapel at SockanossetCranston, Rhode Island
kannafoot > February 3, 2009ForgottenMore snow again today. It was a driving sleet when I went out for today's photo. Oddly enough, this playground wasn't in use! Imagine kids not wanting to play on the slides when it was such a balmy 25 degrees with a nice cold wind off the water topped off with sleet pelting your face!Sabin Point ParkEast Providence, Rhode Island
kannafoot > January 25, 2009Pipe DreamsI've had my eye on this beautiful old building for quite some time and finally decided to use it for today's shot. The building is pre-revolutionary war, having been built in 1772. It's now home to the Potter Rathbun Organ Company.Potter Rathbun Organ CompanyCranston, Rhode Island
kannafoot > January 17, 2009Local LegendsThis tower in Touro Park, Newport is the subject of local legend and archaeological controversy. Local lore has it that this tower is proof positive that vikings visited the Rhode Island coast long before Columbus ever sailed to the New World. Carbon dating of the mortar only places it in the mid-17th Century, however, and the style is very consistent with windmills in the British Isles from that same time period. So, local legend to the contrary, this is probably the remnants of an early colonial period windmill at the height of land in Newport. There's plenty of other evidence that Vikings visited the Rhode Island coast during the late Middle Ages, however this tower isn't among them.Touro ParkNewport, Rhode Island
kannafoot > March 17, 2009Artistic RenderThis is a heavily modified image of St. Francis Church in East Providence. I opted to render it more like a painting than a photograph. I'm not entirely satisfied with the results, but they're a nice start.St. Francis ChurchEast Providence, Rhode Island
kannafoot > March 03, 2009Signs, Signs, Everywhere are SignsThis house has been in an ever decreasing state of decay for almost a decade. There will be several more shots of the house in the coming months since there's so much here to photograph. I thought I'd start with the Keep Out sign on the side gate. Looking at the state of the property, I've often wondered why the sign would even be necessary.North Providence, Rhode Island
kannafoot > February 22, 2009EvergreenI have a set of macro filters that work well with my 28-300 zoom. This macro shot of my evergreen bush is taken with the 4x macro. North Providence, Rhode Island
kannafoot > April 13, 2009Hidden FallsI had nothing special in mind for today's photo. I'm on vacation this week so I just headed out to Burrillville in search of something that would catch my eye. There was a sign for Round Top Fishing Area, so I decided to see what was there and that's when I saw these nice falls tucked away out of sight from the road.Round Top Fishing AreaBurrillville, Rhode Island

Wakefield Store Fronts

While walking the South County Bike Path today I spotted this 19th century store front. The colors on the shops were outstanding and worthy of a photograph. Using FDRTools Basic v2.2 I pulled the colors a bit to produce a cartoon feel for the image, somewhat reminiscent of a 1950's comic book. Further enhancement was done in Photoshop Elements v7.0.
