kannafoot > March 18, 2009"Heap of Rocks"This is the main clubhouse of the Squantum Association. In the Indian dialect native to RI, "Squantum" means "Heap of Rocks", and given its location on a series of rocky outcroppings in the Seekonk River it's a most appropriate name. The clubhouse in this photo was built in 1872 and is still in use today. The East Bay Bike Path now runs in front of the clubhouse. It was built over the old railroad bed that connected much of the East Bay with Providence. As much as the Association members dislike the bike path, it must be better than having a train pass by the dining room several times a day!Squantum AssociationEast Providence, Rhode Island
kannafoot > March 8, 2009Little Red SchoolhouseThis is the Forestdale School in North Smithfield, Rhode Island. Built in 1870, the one-room school house served grades 1-8. As the community grew and other schools opened, this schoolhouse continued to serve as a kindergarten until 1974. Notice the two doors. The schoolhouse, despite having only one room, still required segregated entrances for boys and girls.Forestdale SchoolNorth Smithfield, Rhode Island
kannafoot > January 20, 2009Inauguration DayThe world stood in awe on March 4, 1801 when Thomas Jefferson took his oath of office. For the first time in the young history of our nation, a peaceful transition of power was completed from one political party to another. As John Adams boarded his carriage for the long trek back to Massachusetts, his political rival Jefferson took up the burden of leadership, thus proving that this grand experiment known as the United States of America would succeed.Today marked another equally historic inauguration. Regardless of political affiliation, we as Americans stood with pride watching the peaceful transition of power flow from one political extreme to the other. More importantly, we stood and watched with pride as the color barrier was forever broken. Today the words set forth by Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence were shown to be true. For today we can truly acknowledge that ALL men are created equal. The transition of power to our 44th President is as monumental today as was Jefferson's inauguration in 1801. Well done, America.American FlagCranston, Rhode Island
