Memorabilia18 June 2013 -- 169/365North Providence, Rhode IslandWhen the work day turns into a 12-hour conference call that runs straight through lunch and dinner, a hastily composed safety shot just before heading off to bed becomes a necessity. What you see in tonight's photo is some memorabilia from last night's Boston Bruin's shutout victory over the Chicago Blackhawks. I was invited to attend last night's game at the TD Garden in Boston and decided to use the program, hat, and lineup we received as the subject of this shot. Outdoor Fun17 June 2013 -- 168/365Barrington, Rhode IslandWith clear skies, temperatures in the 70s, and a light breeze, I headed to the East Bay Bike Path in Barrington for today's photo. I knew there would be folks fishing from this bridge overlooking the Barrington River, and with the warm temperatures, it was a safe bet that there would be folks biking long the bike path. The concept I had in mind for the photo is precisely what you see in today's photo. It's rare that concept and reality manage to coincide, but today it happened. The number of bikers on the path was almost to weekend levels, today. The number of fishermen were down, though, possibly because of that ridiculous fence they installed, presumably to prevent fishing line to get tangled with any boats that may pass under the bridge. Boat traffic on this side of the bridge is extremely rare, though, so I'm not sure just how cost effective it was to install the fence.Post processing started with a brilliant cold filter in Topaz Adjust. I then adjusted adaptive exposure, regions, and contrast. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.
A Deal is Struck16 June 2013 -- 167/365North Providence, Rhode IslandI didn't have to travel far for today's photo. My neighbor had a yard sale this weekend, and I spotted an old Flexible Flyer sled leaning against his retaining wall. That was going to be my photo since I haven't seen one of those sleds since Adam was still dating Eve. While there, though, this deal was struck for some automotive equipment, and that made a much more interesting story. Besides, I was able to keep the sled in the background, so both objectives were actually satisfied.Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, boost black, boost white, and protect highlights. A levels adjustment and sepia photo filter were added in PSE.
Kennedy Plaza15 June 2013 -- 166/365Providence, Rhode IslandI'm still enjoying the street photography with the 50mm prime focus, and today was a perfect day to head downcity. There are a surprising number of people waiting for buses at Kennedy Plaza, the state's land transportation hub. The plaza dates to 1848 when it was christened City Hall Park. The current city hall, seen in the background, was built 30 years later in 1878. The park was renamed to Kennedy Plaza in 1964 following the assassination of the 35th president. The then Democratic candidate for the presidency spoke on the steps of City hall on November 7, 1960 just prior to his election.Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivtiy sliders, adaptive exposure, contrast, and boost white. A sepia photo filter was added in PSE.
Repairs14 June 2013 -- 165/365Providence, Rhode IslandHistorical markers have been disappearing at an alarming rate throughout the state. Thieves have been prying the bronze plaques off anything that's accessible and selling them to local scrap yards. That these plaques are being stolen from high traffic locations and the thefts are going unchecked suggests there's a bit of corruption involved. This location is a prime example. It's on busy South Main Street in Providence, right at the entrance to the Roger Williams National Memorial. The intersection not 100 yards north of this marker is busy at all hours. The plaques on both sides of this marker were stolen. Today's photo shows a couple of workers making repairs to the granite base, hopefully in preparation for the installation of another plaque. Let's just hope that the new plaque will be tamper proof, or made of a material that has no value if stolen.Post processing started with a warm tone I filter in Topaz Adjust. I then adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, boost black, boost white, regions, and protect highlights. A levels adjustment and a sepia photo filter were added in PSE.
Improving the Odds13 June 2013 -- 164/365Providence, Rhode IslandThe weather forecast for today was horrible, so as a precaution I stopped at India Point before work. With the "nifty fifty" attached, I found this interesting scene of one fisherman with 7 poles lined across the dark. (The two spectators in the background are just that: spectators. They were not fishing.) As I lined up the shot, the fisherman leaped into action, making a big show of reaching for the pole and grinning broadly for the camera. He held that pose through every shot I took. The prey, in this case, were striped bass. He had not caught any this morning, but several 34 pounders were pulled out of the river here yesterday, so he was optimistic that he'd have something to show for it. Of course, if a 34 pound fish grabs one of those lines, I'm not quite sure how he planned to catch the pole before it went into the river. Now that would make a great photo!Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, regions, boost black, boost white, and protect highlights. A levels adjustment and a sepia photo filter were added in PSE.
Power Nap12 June 2013 -- 163/365Providence, Rhode IslandI haven't used my "nifty fifty" in a while, and I was in the mood for some lunchtime street photography, so I headed downcity at lunch to see what I could find. I parked on Water Street and had no sooner started walking towards the city when I spotted this gentleman taking a power nap on a bench along the river. It was too good to pass up. I did take a few closer shots, but this distance seemed to capture the proper mood of him resting in seeming seclusion with the bustling city towering over him in the background.Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, protect highlights, boost black, and boost white. I added a brightness and contrast adjustment, a levels adjustment, and a sepia photo filter in PSE.
Safety Check11 June 2013 -- 162/365North Providence, Rhode IslandI, along with 46% of the homes in Rhode Island, heat with natural gas. I also cook with natural gas, and have a gas clothes dryer. Every three years, National Grid sends inspectors to check the integrity of gas pipes leading into the gas meter. Just as I was about to head out for today's "photo a day" shot, the meter inspector arrived and quickly became today's photo subject. The process took all of about three minutes.Post processing started with a brilliant warm filter in Topaz Adjust. I then adjusted adaptive exposure, regions, and protect highlights. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.
Aquatic Cowboy10 June 2013 -- 161/365East Providence, Rhode IslandIt was starting to rain as I went out at lunch for today's photo, so I opted for a location that was close and with ample parking. Bold Point Park off Veteran's Parkway has a very active boater section this time of year, and I wasn't disappointed. This fisherman was just unloading his boat and preparing for an afternoon fishing for stripers. The way he held the rope like a lasso reminded me more of a cowboy than a fisherman, hence the caption.Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I then adjusted adaptive exposure, regions, protect highlights, boost black, boost white, contrast, and color sensitivity sliders. A levels adjustment and a sepia photo filter were added in PSE.
