Armenian Martyr's Memorial This beautiful monument stands in honor of the 1,500,000 Armenians that were martyred in the 1915 genocide by the Ottoman Turks. The monument was dedicated on April 25th, 1999. Despite pouring rain, over 500 people from around New England attended the ceremony. North Burial GroundProvidence, Rhode Island
Inscription on the Memorial This inscription is self-explanatory. It challenges all of us to remember the genocide that occurred in 1915. North Burial GroundProvidence, Rhode Island
Elks Memorial There are only a handful of stone markers, but it's estimated that over 100 members of the Elks are buried in this section. North Burial GroundProvidence, Rhode Island
High Ground Overlook The property on which the North Burial Ground sits consists of a series of rolling hills. Plots on high ground were prime real estate.North Burial GroundProvidence, Rhode Island
Chad Brown Most Rhode Islanders are familiar with the Chad Brown Housing Projects between Admiral Street and Douglas Avenue, but few Rhode Islanders know anything at all about the man for whom the projects are named. The Reverend Chad Brown was the co-founder of Providence and one of the first ministers of the First Baptist Church in Providence. He was the first surveyor of Providence, and if you drive most of the tiny streets between South Main Street and Hope Street, the layout of the property and the neighborhood designs owe their origins to Chad Brown. A Question of Race This husband and wife grave site presents some interesting historical insight. Notice that the stone specifically refers to Mr. Haskell as "a man of colour." The poem on his wife's stone reads, "A professed disciple of Jesus Christ, she lived in the practice of His precepts, and died in hope of reaping the reward of grace in His kingdom where every complexion will unite in praising Him who has washed their robes and made them white in His own blood. Of note, though, is the emphasis on Complexion and White in the inscription. They stand out on the marker as if in bold script. I'm sure historians would glean volumes about the attitudes of the mid-19th century by studying these stones. North Burial GroundProvidence, Rhode Island
An Eye Towards Providence This gentle lane atop one of the many hills in the cemetery offers a view of Providence about a mile distant. North Burial GroundProvidence, Rhode Island
Joseph Bucklin V Rhode Island struck the first significant blow against the English in June 1772 when the revenue ship H.M.S. Gaspee was torched off what is now Pawtuxet Village. Only one shot was fired in the Gaspee Incident, as it was know. That shot struck the Captain of the Gaspee, Lt. William Duddington in the leg and groin, and the shot is believed to have been fired by this man, Joseph Bucklin V. North Burial GroundProvidence, Rhode Island
Poe's Love Edgar Allen Poe spent a fair amount of time in Providence, and he took a fancy to Sarah Helen Whitman. The two became engaged, and Whitman agreed to an immediate marriage. Her mother and friends intervened, however, when they learned that Poe was also pursuing both Annie Richmond and his childhood sweetheart Sarah Elmira Royster. The boy managed to get around! Suffice it to say that the engagement was ended. Sarah Whitman died at the home of a friend on nearby Bowen Street, and she is buried here in the North Burial Ground.
