Lexington and Concord - 29 December 2008 : Two lanterns shining from the steeple of the Old North Church signaled the departure by sea of British Regulars from the city of Boston. Their destination was Lexington and Concord. Their intended mission was to confiscate arms caches held by American colonists. In the early morning hours of April 19, 1775, the British Regulars encountered a group of Minutemen on the Lexington Common; American patriots so named because of their pledge to fight on a minute's notice. The patriots were under the command of Captain John Parker who instructed his men to "Stand your ground. Don't fire unless fired upon, but if they mean to have a war, let it begin here." Nobody knows who fired a musket round, but upon hearing it the Redcoats opened fire. Eight Minutemen were killed. The British then marched on the city of Concord some five miles distant, seizing the North Bridge. Angry Minutemen advanced on the Regulars and the two sides exchanged volleys. The Americans proved more disciplined than the Redcoats expected and the British line dissolved in panic. The regulars began a long retreat back to Boston, harried every inch of the way by American colonists that learned the art of guerrilla warfare in the 4th French and Indian war only a decade past. At days end, 73 British were dead and another 26 missing. The Patriots had lost 49 men with another 5 missing. The war for American Independence had begun.

It is not known who built the many chambers, walls, and meeting places, however there is very strong evidence that the site was home to a migratory European population. The site originally opened in 1958 under the name "Mystery Hill Caves". It was renamed to America's Stonehenge in 1982.
